Advanced technology for pavements, trails, road base, subgrade, earthworks; erosion, sediment, dust control; earth retention, channel and slope protection
An aesthetic, environmentally friendly alternative to asphalt and concrete pavement for paved pathways, trails, driveways, parking lots, streets and secondary roads
NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement can be constructed in a wide variety of natural colors, depending upon the coloration and availability of local aggregate materials of suitable quality and gradation characteristics. Resin Pavement binder emulsion is mixed with aggregate materials to produce compacted pavement surfaces that retain the natural coloration and texture of the constituent aggregate material. SSPCo’s environmentally friendly Resin Pavement mixtures contain no petroleum ingredients and are appropriate for use in sensitive natural environments, including access to beach, estuary and riparian areas.

Soil Stabilization Products Company Inc. manufactures, but does not install, NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavment

NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavements typically show higher strengths in materials testing than hot mix asphalt pavement materials. See "Pavement Materials Testing" below.

With temperatures as high as 116°F in Las Vegas as recently as July 5, 2007, and temperatures
over 120°F on record, caution needs to be exercised. At these temperatures even the most solar reflective pavements may be too hot to safely walk on barefoot or to sit on. The good news, when you are standing on a reflective pavement, is that it is still likely to be 30°F to 40°F cooler than black asphalt pavement during these high temperature conditions.

Green Pavement Technology
The significance of the NaturalPAVE® XL Resin Pavement™ pavement technology is clear when the environmental advantages are factored in: no air pollution or fossil fuel burning required to heat the product during transportation, storage, mixing or placement; no carcinogenic air emissions to endanger worker health; and no toxic components to contaminate water supplies. Additionally, these light colored solar reflective pavements provide a cool alternative to black asphalt and its deleterious contributions to the Urban Heat Island Effect, smog formation, greenhouse gas emission and global warming.

While it’s typically the natural aesthetic aspect that drives the selection of NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement for the majority of the projects to date, the green technology aspect provides tremendous potential as the market also becomes better educated about the environmental consequences of hot mix asphalt pavements in regards to water quality. At some point, research studies will take advantage of local storm water monitoring programs and document the amount of contaminates being released off freshly placed asphalt into adjacent watersheds. With this knowledge in hand, regulators will be influencing greater utilization of non-toxic pavement materials adjacent to streams, rivers and estuaries. SSPCo’s clean pavement technology answers that need.

Public interest in environmentally responsible design and construction continues to motivate increased public agency awareness and implementation of green construction technology. This awareness has spread from federal and state level to county and city level, with mandated requirements for greener, more sustainable construction becoming far more common. As evidenced by NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement projects completed or scheduled for construction, interest is significant and growing.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its LEED program (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), a Green Building Rating System, has provided a vitally important standard format for agency personnel and design consultants who specify the materials for new construction and remodeling projects. Many agency, corporate, and education facilities are now being constructed according to these standards. The LEED rating system has set the bar high and this is having an increasingly positive impact upon the market.

Overlaying Asphalt Pavement
Whether it’s air or water quality protection, the comfort of a cool pavement surfacing, or a matter of simple natural aesthetics, NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement can be utilized to cover up existing asphalt pavement as an “overlay” in similar manner as additional layers of asphalt are placed on top of older asphalt pavements. As the environmental and aesthetic rationale for overlaying asphalt with a more appropriate pavement surfacing gains recognition, the tried and proven NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement technology will be the obvious choice.

Cool Pavement Technology
When different pavements are tested with infrared thermometers to evaluate their comparative surface temperatures, NaturalPAVE® XL Resin Pavement™ typically tests similar in temperature to light colored concrete, while adjacent asphalt pavements are far hotter. This temperature difference is a health and comfort issue adjacent to residential areas, offices, theme parks, schools, and other public facilities. SSPCo is promoting greater awareness of the pavement temperature issue in our educational efforts and targeting markets such as public school construction where a healthier alternative to asphalt playground surfaces will justify the specification of a more user friendly pavement surfacing product. Heat absorbent asphalt pavements are gaining increasing notoriety for their contribution to Urban Heat Island problems, increased air conditioning and energy demand, increased smog formation, greenhouse gas emission and global warming. SSPCo is also promoting the cool pavement aspects of NatualPAVE XL Resin Pavement as part of public agency and private industry initiatives to reduce environmental problems generated by heat absorbing pavement materials.

High Albedo Pavement
The most important aspect of a cool pavement is its ability to reflect rather than absorb solar energy. Among the traditional pavement materials, concrete sets the standard as being the most reflective (highest albedo), while black asphalt is the least reflective (low albedo) and most absorbent of solar energy. Typically NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures are formulated with light colored aggregate mixtures and consequently have high solar reflectance similar to concrete pavements. The differences in pavement surface temperatures between heat absorbent asphalt and highly reflective NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement can be significant. For example, utilizing an infrared thermometer during mid-August afternoon conditions (98°F air temperatures) and measuring areas of pavement subject to full day sun exposure, the following pavement surface temperatures were recorded at a recent installation of NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement in Washington, D.C.

New Asphalt Pavement 145°F
Weathered Asphalt Pavement 139°F
NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement 121°F

With body temperature in the range of 98.6°F, human health and comfort are noticeably affected as temperatures increase above 100°F. Given the news that hotter summer weather conditions are to be expected in the future, proven cool pavement is going to become increasingly attractive around our living environments.

Arizona State University SMART Materials Testing Facility
The thermal conductivity of a pavement material is also relevant to its effectiveness as a cool pavement. A pavement that has high thermal conductivity, such as asphalt, is going to rapidly take on the solar energy and transmit heat through the pavement into the base course materials and subgrade soils below the pavement. As indicated by testing at the ASU SMART Materials Testing Facility, both asphalt and concrete pavment materials conduct heat more rapidly than NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement. In combination with high solar reflectance, this advantage in thermal resistance makes NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement the standard for cool pavement technology.

When thermal resistance is mentioned, it’s often in relationship to insulation value and resistance to cold temperatures. In cold climate locations, the excellent thermal resistance of NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement can help moderate temperatures around buildings far better than asphalt pavement. The fact that NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures are not black also means that they are less subject to infrared heat loss through night sky radiation. In wintertime, it’s better to have a cool pavement than a cold pavement.

NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement, similar to hot mix asphalt, is a surface course pavement material that is reliant on the workmanship of the pavement contractor during placement operations and on the strength and stability of the base course and underlying layers upon which it is constructed. SSPCo is a supplier of pavement materials only and not a contractor, engineer, installer, or construction inspector.

CONSTRUCTION
NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures are cold applied, but installed like hot mix asphalt pavement mixtures. Similar to hot mix asphalt, NaturalPAVE XL mixtures are classified as “flexible pavement” materials. Paving machines are typically used for placement, and asphalt rollers for compaction.
DESIGN OPTIONS
With the availability of NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement, designers now have the option to specify pavement materials that are complementary to the colors of the built structures, or to the natural color of the native soil and rock materials at the project site.
